FARM BILL PASSES BOTH HOUSES
The U.S. Senate...late Thursday morning...voted 81 to 15 for final passage of farm bill legislation.
The Senate followed House passage Wednesday by a vote of 318 to 106, giving both chambers a comfortable margin to override President Bush's promised veto of the bill.
Reports indicate that the President and his staff will try to convince member of the House to vote against the bill on the override vote. To override a bill...two-thirds of each chamber must vote for the override.
That's 290 votes in the House and 67 in the Senate. The possibility of stopping an override will be an uphill battle.
If Congress overrides the veto, it would be only the second under President Bush's two terms. Last fall, Congress overrode the president on the Water Resources Development Act, which also was important to agricultural interests.
