#7 Jayhawks Lose Big 12 Opener at Home to West Virginia

For the first time since 1991, the Kansas Jayhawks are 0-1 in conference play.

The #7 Jayhawks fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers 62-61 on Wednesday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse, snapping a 33-year streak of victories in conference opening games.

Kansas fell behind by as many as 18 points in the second half to a WVU team that was without two of its three leading scorers due to injury, but rallied late and tied the game on a Zeke Mayo three-point play with 16 seconds left. On the ensuing Mountaineer possession, Javon Small was fouled in the act of shooting by KU’s Flory Bidunga with 1.8 seconds to play. Small missed the first free throw but made the second. Kansas inbounded the ball the length of the floor to KJ Adams but his contested mid-range jumper was an airball as the buzzer sounded.

The loss drops KU to 9-3 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play. They head to Orlando to face UCF on Sunday.
