Accident Injures Three When Mattress Hit On Highway 75 In Jackson County

An accident in Jackson County Monday night sent three people to the hospital and caused a brief power outage in the southern part of the county.

Sheriff Tim Morse said in a release that a northbound 2005 Chrysler Sebring was reported to have struck a mattress in the roadway on US Highway 75 south of 126th Road near Hoyt around 6:15 p.m. This caused the Sebring to cross the median and both southbound lanes and severed a telephone pole on the west side of the highway.

The driver, 19-year-old Rebecca Gilchrist of Onaga and her passengers, 21-year-old Michelle Hosler of Topeka and 32-year-old Vernon Tyrell of Topeka were all taken to a Topeka hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Southbound traffic was down to one lane until about 8:45 p.m.
