American Red Cross to install free smoke alarms in Oakland and North Topeka neighborhoods on Saturday
On Saturday, April 27th, American Red Cross volunteers will be knocking on doors in the Oakland and North Topeka areas to install free smoke alarms as part of the Sound The Alarm campaign.
Topeka was one of 100 cities chosen nationwide to participate in the campaign. Jane Blocher from the Red Cross says there will be over one hundred volunteers knocking on doors in those areas from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
“We anticipate knocking on the doors of literally hundreds and hundreds of residents that day,” said Blocher.
People can register in advance to receive a smoke alarm by calling 2-1-1 or visiting GetASmokeAlarm.org. However, those that live in those communities do not need to register in advance. Volunteers will also be replacing batteries in existing alarms and helping families create escape plans.
“We spend an average of 15-20 minutes in each home,” said Blocher. “If a home owner is not there when we come, we’ll leave a door hanger behind telling them how they can get in touch with us and we’ll come back at another time.”
The Kansas State Fire Marshal donated 100 smoke alarms for the event. Blocher said that they already have over a thousand smoke alarms in stock, and hope to install close to 800 alarms on Saturday.
Those wanting to volunteer with the event can register at SoundTheAlarm.org. Volunteers will be trained before going into the neighborhoods. Volunteer shifts are available from 9 a.m. to noon and noon to 3 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the Oakland Community Center, 801 NE Poplar Street, to kick-off the event.
