Douglas and Leavenworth County tornado rated EF-4 by National Weather Service

The National Weather Service assessed the tornado that hit portions of Lawrence and Linwood Tuesday night as an EF-4, with peak winds of 170 miles per hour. The up to a mile wide tornado was on the ground for almost 32 miles.

Eighteen people were hurt, but no one was killed.

It first touched down just after 6 p.m. about 12.5 miles west-northwest of Baldwin City, meteorologists said. The storm finally ended around 7 p.m. a mile and a half west of Bonner Springs.

The classifications are based on preliminary evidence and NWS notes it could be subject to change based on a final review of the data.
