Flooding dangers to increase this week

The threat of continued rainfall is spreading across Kansas and it will be here for awhile.

“It looks like it’s going to go on,” said meteorologist Dan Holiday. “It will go on until probably tomorrow evening for us. Then we get a break for awhile on Wednesday. Wednesday night, another system comes in and Thursday, here we are looking at another threat of severe weather.”

Some forecast models have up to half a foot of rain or more over the next week or so.

“The rain is just not going to let up,” said Holiday. “I think we will know by the end of this week where we stand in terms of how serious this flooding situation will be.”

Most flooding related deaths occur in vehicles.

“In a situation like this where we see more heavy rainfall, it doesn’t matter whether you’re on a dirt road or you’re on the interstate,” said Holiday. “It’s so important to pay attention to road closures, or, for that matter, how hard it’s raining and certainly how high the water is where you’re going. If it doesn’t look like it’s something you can cross and you want to try and gun it and cross it, it’s just not worth it.”

A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for much of Kansas through Tuesday evening.
