Gas prices stable for the moment, but sanctions could change that, says AAA

Gas prices in Kansas are stable, for now.

“We’re up one cent to an average of $2.64 this week,” said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. “Certainly moderating from the much larger increases we’d seen over the past couple of weeks.”

Prices have been up 20 cents in the past month.

“Now, we’re about 15 cents higher than we were a year ago,” said Steward. “Overall, we always have good news. We’re 20 cents less than the national average of $2.84.”

That keeps Kansas at 12th cheapest in America, though everyone’s prices could go up with Monday’s decision by the Trump administration to make the sanctions against Iran’s oil exports complete beginning in May.

“Geopolitical issues around the globe always have the potential to impact our gas prices here in the U.S.,” said Steward. “Those sanctions are certainly something that we’re looking at.”

OPEC’s next meeting where prices will likely be discussed is in June.
