Junction City shooting results in brief school lockdown Wednesday

A Junction City elementary school was briefly locked down Wednesday after a report of a shooting close by.

According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Department, just after 2 p.m., deputies responded to 3407 Liberty Hall Rd. to the report of a male in his early twenties who had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. It was reported the subject was shot by an unknown race male with a dark complexion wearing blue jeans and a white shirt.

Law enforcement from Geary County Sheriff’s Department and the Junction City Police Department set up a perimeter and searched the area on foot and with the use of K9’s while the Kansas Highway Patrol provided an overview from one of their aerial units.

Spring Valley Elementary was placed on a brief lockdown until it was determined there was no threat to public safety.

The victim was transported to Geary Community Hospital by Junction City Fire/EMS in stable condition. The investigation continues.
