K-State Sports Weekend Roundup: Nov. 30-Dec. 1
Kansas State Wildcats athletics had an up-and-down weekend, with heartbreak on the gridiron in Farmageddon and a couple of blowout wins on the hardwood.
Football: K-State 21, Iowa State 29
The Wildcats finished the regular season with their third loss in four games, never quite putting it all together in a one-score road loss to the Iowa State Cyclones. K-State cut Iowa State’s lead to 24-21 with just under five minutes to play in the third quarter on an Avery Johnson touchdown pass to Garrett Oakley, but on its next three drives gave up a safety and turned the ball over on downs twice to end the game.
Johnson went 12-of-28 passing for 220 yards and three touchdowns in the loss, and also ran for 64 yards. He was also penalized for intentional grounding in the end zone to allow the aforementioned, and both he and Keagan Johnson lost fumbles on Saturday night.
Men’s basketball: Arkansas-Pine Bluff 73, K-State 120
K-State set a new program scoring record on Sunday afternoon by dropping 120 points on the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions, ranked as the third-worst team in the nation according to KenPom.
Six Wildcats scored in double figures in the win, led by 21 points off the bench from Achor Achor. Dug McDaniel had 18 points and a career-high 10 assists for his first-career double-double. David Castillo and David N’Guessan scored 17 points each, while Brendan Hausen had 14 and Max Jones added 12. As a team, the Wildcats shot 61.5% from the floor and 52.5% from three-point range (21-of-40).
Women’s basketball: Central Arkansas 39, K-State 86
A 29-5 first quarter set the tone for the Wildcats on Sunday in their blowout win over the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears. In fact, K-State held Central Arkansas to single digits in points in each of the first two quarters.
Serena Sundell led five Wildcats in double figures with 17 points in just 20 minutes of action. Taryn Sides went 6-of-7 shooting for 15 points, Ayoka Lee added 12 along with six rebounds, and both Temira Poindexter and Jaelyn Glenn had 10 points in the win.
