Kansas 16th on new Wallethub Best & Worst States to Start a Business survey

The personal-finance website WalletHub on Monday released its report on 2019’s Best & Worst States to Start a Business.

“Kansas ranked 16th overall,” said analyst Jill Gonzalez. “Definitely above average here. It did really well in terms of its overall business environment, but it could probably be in the top 10 next year if it does better in terms of access to resources.”

To determine the most fertile grounds for planting and growing new ventures, WalletHub compared the 50 U.S. states across 26 key indicators of startup success.

“We’re looking for the growth in the number of small businesses there, startups per capita,” said Gonzalez. “We see growth in the average business revenues, pretty good five-year business survival rates and industry variety.”

The data set ranges from financing accessibility to availability of human capital to office-space affordability.

“Kansas can improve in terms of financing accessibility,” said Gonzalez. “How big are the small business loans they’re giving out, per the number of small businesses? The state also could use more venture investments per capita.”
