Kansas City Chiefs edge Los Angeles Chargers 17-10, lose WR Rashee Rice

The Kansas City Chiefs earned another hard-fought, one-score victory in Week 4, hanging on to beat the Los Angeles Chargers 17-10.

With this most recent victory, the Chiefs are now 4-0 this season with each win decided by seven or fewer points.

The Chiefs may have suffered a massive loss in the process, though, with wide receiver Rashee Rice leaving the game on a cart in the first quarter after colliding with quarterback Patrick Mahomes while both tried to make a tackle following an interception. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Kansas City is worried it could be a torn ACL for the second-year receiver, a season-ending injury.

“I feel terrible for Rashee,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, adding: “We will hope for the best.”

Rice has been Kansas City’s leading receiver this year with 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns entering Week 4.

While Rice was knocked out early, tight end Travis Kelce stepped up in his place with the veteran’s best game of the season thus far. He caught seven passes for 89 yards, both of which were game highs.

“The whole Kelce thing in general hasn’t been a worry to me,” Mahomes said. “I mean, I know whenever we need him, he’s going to make plays. And that’s what he did today.”

Mahomes went 19-of-29 passing in the win for 245 yards with one touchdown and one interception. That’s now six touchdown passes and five interceptions for him this season.

Sunday’s game also featured the return of Kareem Hunt to a Chiefs uniform, and he was also the game’s leading rusher with 14 carries for 69 yards. He previously played for the Chiefs in 2017 and part of 2018.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert played through a high ankle sprain on Sunday and went 16-of-27 passing for 179 yards and a touchdown.

Entering Sunday night, the Chiefs are one of just two 4-0 teams, joining the Minnesota Vikings. Next up for Kansas City is a return home to Arrowhead Stadium on Monday, Oct. 7 to face the New Orleans Saints.
