Kansas City Chiefs stay unbeaten with 30-24 overtime win over Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Kansas City Chiefs outlasted a late rally by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9, knocking off their NFC opponents 30-24 in overtime to improve to 8-0 on the season.
It took a heroic drive from quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers to even push the game to the extra session. Mayfield led a 10-play, 71-yard drive in just 1:49 to tie the game, finding wide receiver Ryan Miller for the tying score.
The Chiefs got the ball back with barely any time left in the fourth quarter and didn’t do anything productive with that possession. However, in overtime, they put on a clock-killing and soul-crushing clinic.
Kansas City won the overtime coin toss, elected to receive the kick and never let the Tampa Bay offense see the field. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and running back Kareem Hunt pounded the Buccaneers defense into submission on a 10-play, game-winning drive. Mahomes went 5-of-5 passing on the drive while Hunt ran the ball four times for 16 yards and punched in the winning touchdown.
Mahomes had one of his best games of the year in the win, going 33-of-44 through the air for 291 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, the first time this season he didn’t throw at least one pick.
Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had his breakout game in Chiefs red, catching eight passes for 86 yards and two scores, more than he caught in six games with the Tennessee Titans to start the season. Tight end Travis Kelce also had a huge game, catching a career-high 14 passes for 100 yards, his first 100-yard game of the year.
Hunt went for 106 yards on 27 carries Monday night, plus the winning score, his second 100-yard game since returning to Kansas City.
Mayfield finished the game 23-of-31 passing for 200 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort, which dropped the Buccaneers to 4-5, which is still good enough for second place in the NFC South standings.
The Chiefs will try to make it nine wins a row to open the season when they host the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Kickoff for that AFC West showdown is set for noon central time.
