Kansas City Chiefs suffer first loss of the season in 30-21 defeat against Buffalo Bills
The Kansas City Chiefs will not be the third team in the Super Bowl era to go undefeated in the regular season.
Instead, the Buffalo Bills put an end to the Chiefs’ unblemished record in Week 11 with a 30-21 victory in Orchard Park, New York.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with four lead changes in the second quarter alone. After a scoreless third quarter, however, the Bills took control.
Buffalo scored just over two minutes into the fourth quarter to take a 23-14 lead. The Kansas City responded midway through the period when quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with tight end Noah Gray for their second touchdown hookup of the day.
That was the last time the Chiefs had a clear shot at getting back in the game, however, because the Bills’ final meaningful drive of the game lasted 5:36 and ended in a touchdown run by quarterback Josh Allen, putting Buffalo up nine points with just over two minutes to play.
A Mahomes interception five plays later squashed any hopes for a miracle comeback by the visitors.
This is the fourth consecutive regular-season win for the Bills in this head-to-head series, although the Chiefs have won three straight playoff meetings in the same span.
Mahomes finished 23-of-33 passing for 196 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in the losing effort, completing passes to 11 different receivers in the process. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy paced the group of pass catchers with four grabs for 61 yards and a score on Sunday.
Allen completed 27-of-40 passes for 262 yards with one score and one pick in the victory, and he tacked on 55 yards rushing and a touchdown, too.
The Chiefs will continue their road swing next week when they visit the Carolina Panthers, who were off this week. That game is slated for 12:00 p.m. central time kickoff next Sunday.
