Kansas Department of Labor Works on Website Problems

Amid a surge of complaints from out-of-work Kansans, state officials are making another effort to fix the state’s troubled system for filing unemployment claims.

The Kansas Department of Labor said in a tweet that tech workers took the agency’s website down for an hour Tuesday at noon and at 7 Tuesday evening.

Governor Laura Kelly said this week that initial claims are up by 3,400% for the year. Kelly said the system was the victim of “decades of neglect,” and already was slated for an upgrade.

Just before 9 Tuesday night, the Department Tweeted, “If you log into your U.I. benefits account and get a message saying, “Claim status is not available at this time,” don’t panic! We have temporarily suspended the feature that allows you to check your benefits status in an effort to increase our website functionality.”
