Officer shot in Russell Thursday; suspect in custody

A Russell, Kansas police officer was shot at a motel Thursday night.

Police Chief Dale Weimaster told KIN affiliate KRSL that officers were sent to the Days Inn there to check on a suicidal subject. They tried to talk to him and he shot first. The man was arrested and the officer he shot was taken to Russell Regional Hospital by ambulance, stabilized and transferred to Hays Medical Center.

The officer is a Patrol Sergeant and a 17-year-veteran with the Russell Police Department. The officer’s name has not been released. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and Russell County Sheriff’s Office are assisting.
