Overland Park 2nd best city for First-Time Home Buyers, according to WalletHub

The personal finance website WalletHub released its report on 2019’s Best & Worst Cities for First-Time Home Buyers this week and a Kansas community did well.

“Overland Park, Kansas, ranked second-best, only behind Tampa, Florida for one of the best places for first-time home buyers,” said WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez. “It really comes down to a great quality of life and a really good real estate market right now.”

Overland Park scored really highly in quality of life measures.

“When it comes to things like a high-quality school system, a good job market, pretty low home energy costs, a low violent crime rate, all of those things where you’re looking to buy a home, settle down, you want a good community,” said Gonzalez. “Overland Park does really well across the board there.”

WalletHub took the pulse of real estate in 300 cities of varying sizes.

“Overland Park has a very good rent-to-price ratio, for a buyer, that’s something that you’re looking for,” said Gonzalez. “It has a good buy vs. rent break even horizon as well. There’s a lot of building permit activity going on, so more new homes to be buying and a good amount of mortgage lenders and real estate agents per capita, so hopefully it’s a little bit easier for you to find your home, as well.”
