Lawrence police say an employee at a Subway restaurant apparently made up an armed robbery in order to steal money from the business.

The armed robbery was reported Tuesday.  The Lawrence Journal-World reports the Subway employee initially reported being outside the restaurant when a man with a knife demanded cash.

The employee described the suspect and said he ran away from the Subway.

Police said Thursday investigators found information that didn’t match the employee’s statement and determined the theft was committed internally.

Sgt. Amy Rhoads said stolen money was recovered.

No one has been arrested but Rhoads said police intend to submit affidavits for the district attorney’s office to consider charging the suspect and an accomplice.
