Red Cross Giving Day Wednesday
Red Cross Giving Day is a 24-hour fundraising campaign with the goal of helping families in need.
“Most people probably don’t realize that we respond to about 62,000 disasters every single year,” said American Red Cross President & CEO Gail J. McGovern. “Most of them are actually home fires caused by cooking accidents.”
Responding to a house fire may seem like a small thing, but it’s not to the family with the fire.
“If you’re a victim of a home fire, to you, it’s like a Category 4 hurricane,” said McGovern. “Unfortunately, about 2500 people die every year in these home fires. We’re doing everything we can to try to reduce that number.”
The mortality rate can be cut in half if the home has a working smoke alarm.
“Any gift, regardless of size, is deeply appreciated,” said McGovern. “If they can’t make a financial donation, we can always use volunteers. They can learn about that on our website as well. The need for blood is constant. If they are interested in donating blood, that would be a wonderful way to save someone’s life.”
