Restaurant Week Begins in Topeka on Friday

Restaurant Week starts tomorrow throughout the city of Topeka and some of the areas best dining establishments will be in the spotlight.

Participating restaurants will be dishing out meals that are full of flavor but easy on your wallet.

“Restaurant Week starts this Friday, March 1st, and goes through March 8th,” says Topeka food blogger, Alison Beebe. “There are about sixteen restaurants that are registered to provide meals during that week. Each restaurant has a particular menu to order from for Restaurant Week.  So, they’re offering specials for lunch and/or dinner. It’s fun to go around and check out some local restaurants that you’ve never been to (in order) to see what they have to offer.”

In its third year, Topeka Restaurant Week has grown considerably since its inception.

“The number of restaurants has probably tripled from the first year, and, perhaps, doubled from last year,” says Beebe.

Cities across the country have hosted restaurant weeks in the past as a way of bringing diners in during the winter months when numbers seem to diminish.

“Restaurant week was originally thought of as an idea to perk up business at a time of year when people tend to hibernate,” says RowHouse Restaurant Owner and Executive Chef Greg Fox.  “So, the general plan, at first, was to gather groups of restaurants together to say, ‘Let’s make a reason for people to come out in a season when people tend to stay in.’ So, that’s why restaurant weeks tend to be in January or February.”

Diners, this year, can feel good about eating at participating restaurants during Topeka Restaurant Week.

“Five percent of the proceeds will be going to fund a student who is going into the culinary or hospitality field from our area,” says Beebe.
