WalletHub study shows Topeka growing slowly, other Kansas cities middle of the pack

The personal finance website WalletHub released its 2019’s Fastest-Growing Cities in America list. This was one of the most wide-ranging studies WalletHub has released.

“We compared over 500 cities of varying population sizes based on almost 20 key measures of both growth and decline over the last seven years,” said analyst Jill Gonzalez.

The state capital in Kansas was among the slowest growing cities in the nation.

“Of the 515 cities, Topeka ranked 501st,” said Gonzalez. “When we’re looking at midsize cities, that actually ranks as the 6th slowest growing city.”

Just because Topeka did poorly doesn’t mean all Kansas cities did the same.

“Kansas City ranked 281st overall, Overland Park 264th, Olathe 243rd, Lawrence 235th,” said Gonzalez. “It’s certainly not all dark spots for Kansas cities.”

The South and West currently seem to be attractive places to move, as the U.S. Census Bureau reports eight of the 15 cities with the largest population gains in 2018 were located in the South and six were in the West.
