Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Seaman senior basketball player Kobe Bonner and Shawnee Heights freshman wrestler Maranda Bell.

Bonner is third in the city in scoring, averaging 17 points per game for the Vikings. The three-year starter at point guard has led Seaman to a 9-7 record this season and was a catalyst in last year’s state tournament berth. He scored 17 of his 19 points in a furious second-half comeback in Seaman’s most recent victory, over De Soto on Friday night. We spoke to Kobe about being a point guard, playing his dad in 21, his favorite NBA team, and much more.

Bell placed second in the 182-pound weight class at the third annual Kansas Girls State Wrestling Tournament last weekend in Hutchinson. She won all four of her preliminary matches by pinfall before losing in the championship match on points. Bell is the second Shawnee Heights wrestler to battle for a state championship in the three years of the girls state tournament. We spoke to Maranda about getting into wrestling, inspiring other girls to try the sport, and much more.
