Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Shawnee Heights senior wrestler Freddy Maisberger IV and Washburn Rural junior basketball player Kasey Hamilton.

Maisberger is currently ranked fifth among wrestlers in class 5A at the 113-pound weight class by the KWCA. He is 27-3 on the season and won the 113-pound title at the Silver Lake Invitational last week, going 4-0 on the day. Maisberger is aiming to qualify for state for the fourth time in his high school career. He has signed to wrestle at Lindenwood University. We spoke to Freddy about his favorite maneuvers, being part of a wrestling family, what motivates him to succeed, and more.

Hamilton is the starting point guard for one of the state’s best teams. The Lady Junior Blues are 14-1, a perfect 9-0 in Centennial League play, and are ranked third in class 6A by the KBCA. Hamilton is averaging 15.1 points per game in her first year as a starter after playing as a valuable reserve for last season’s team that placed third at state. A three-sport athlete, Hamilton also shines on the softball diamond as Rural’s top pitcher and is committed to Kansas to play softball. We spoke to Kasey about her team’s success, deciding to be a Jayhawk, how being a multi-sport athlete is a benefit, and more.
