Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Topeka High senior basketball player Kee’Andre Smith and Shawnee Heights senior bowler Cayla Bortz.

Smith scored 21 points in a Tuesday night victory over Highland Park that allowed the Trojans to repeat as Centennial League champions. He is the fourth leading scorer and best perimeter defender on a team that finished 18-2 in the regular season. Smith was a starter last season on the Trojan squad that won the league and placed third in state. We talked to Kee’Andre about focusing on defense, dunking on senior night, his favorite NBA players, and more.

Bortz is looking to cap off her stellar bowling career at Shawnee Heights with state gold. She helped the Lady T-Birds win league and regional championships and was the individual champion at both events, rolling a season-best 725 series to take the regional title. She is a two-time state runner-up. Bortz will bowl in college at Central Missouri. We spoke to Cayla about being part of the team at Heights, her past state experiences, her future plans, and more.
