Wichita middle of the pack in Wallethub Greenest Cities survey

Green living means a choice to engage in cleaner, more sustainable habits in order to preserve the planet as much as possible. In a survey from the personal finance website WalletHub, Wichita had some interesting results.

“Wichita just made the top half,” said analyst Jill Gonzalez. “It came in 49th overall. It did well when we’re looking at things like energy sources and overall environment, but could do a lot better when it comes to transportation and lifestyle and policy.”

The advent of wind energy in Kansas helped Wichita’s ranking.

“We see a higher share of electricity from renewable sources in Wichita,” said Gonzalez. “We do see some solar installations, a higher number of smart energy policies and initiatives is something that hopefully we’re seeing in the future.”

Wichita struggles when it comes to green transportation.

“Out of the 100 cities that we looked at, Wichita had the second-highest percentage of commuters who drive,” said Gonzalez. “It’s a more spread out city, not as much public transportation options as many other cities have.”

Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe that stricter environmental regulations are worth the cost.
