Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Shawnee Heights three-sport athlete Tyce Brown and Washburn Rural three-sport athlete Shelby Ebert.

Brown is a standout outfielder for the Thunderbird baseball team, which is off to a 9-2 start this season. He currently ranks second in the city with 10 runs batted in. Brown has been a multi-year starter in baseball, basketball, and football at Heights. He was an first team All-United Kansas Conference selection in both football and basketball this year, and played a role on a 5A state champion basketball team as a sophomore and a Centennial League champion football team as a junior. Brown will play baseball in college at Xavier. We spoke with Tyce about excelling in three sports, his strengths on the diamond, getting to play with his older brother in his high school career, and more.

Ebert currently starts on the softball diamond, keeping the line moving with a .474 average for the 6-0 Lady Blues. She’s no stranger to big games and successful seasons, having reached the state tournament in her last five seasons. In the 2017-18 season she was part of third-place finishes at state in volleyball, basketball, and softball. This year, she has played a starting role in another third-place finish in volleyball and a 6A state championship in basketball. Ebert’s best sport has been volleyball, where she was a 6A All-State and All-Tournament pick this year, and she will play volleyball in college at Emporia State. We spoke with Shelby about being a state champion, her role on the softball team, why she chose Emporia State, and more.
