This week’s Azura Credit Union Athletes of the Week are Hayden junior football player Desmond Purnell and Washburn Rural sophomore golfer Kaitlyn Crough.

Purnell has been a two-way sensation for the unbeaten Wildcats three weeks into the season. Offensively, he’s accumulated over 300 yards of total offense and three touchdowns, including a 27-yard run and an 80-yard reception for scores in last Friday’s victory over Washburn Rural. On defense, he has a pair of interceptions, including a pick-six in a Week Two win over Seaman. Purnell is a two-year starter who has featured on varsity since his freshman year. We spoke to Desmond about which side of the ball he likes better, the talented junior class he’s a part of, and more.

Crough picked a fine time for the best round of her high school career. Her 75 at Western Hills on Monday gave her the individual city golf championship and helped Washburn Rural capture their seventh team title in a row. Crough was a state qualifier as a freshman, and tied for 13th in that meet. The city championship was her first career victory. We spoke to Kaitlyn about her best moment in the city tournament, what she likes best about her team, and more.
