Free Agency for the NFL doesn’t officially begin until Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. but several teams are using the legal tampering phase to set up contracts.

The Kansas City Chiefs used that window to find their next play-making safety.

The Chiefs will add do-it-all defensive back Tyrann Mathieu

The 26-year-old Mathieu was a third-round pick of Arizona in the 2013 draft after a standout career at LSU. He showed glimpses of the same ball-hawking, playmaking safety with the Cardinals, earning a Pro Bowl selection after the 2015 season, but also dealt with his share of injuries.

He signed a $7 million deal with Houston last season and wound up starting all 16 games.

The Chiefs hope to improve one of the NFL’s worst defenses this offseason, and the idea of pairing Mathieu with Eric Berry in the secondary is a strong start.
