Police catch felon with gun Thursday after chase

A Topeka man is behind bars after a brief chase Thursday night.
Police say 51-year-old Gregory E. Smith was doing something suspicious in the area of SW 6th and Lincoln just before 10 p.m., so officers tried to stop him to talk to him. Smith left his bicycle and was chased on foot through the yards there before being caught.
Smith was caught with a firearm. Police say it had a barrel of less than 18 inches. As a felon, he’s prohibited from carrying at all.
