Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.
This week, we recognize the state championship-winning Washburn Rural girls basketball team, coached by Kevin Bordewick.
After finishing third in Class 6A to wrap up the 2017-18 season, the Lady Blues took things the extra step this year. They opened by ripping off 13 straight wins to start the year. They went 18-2 during the regular season, and 13-1 in the Centennial League to claim a share of the league title. After topping Hutchinson and Wichita South in sub-state play, the Lady Blues held off Olathe North in round one of the 6A state tournament in Wichita, stunned unbeaten defending champion Derby in the semifinals, and defeated Topeka High 54-42 in the state title game. It’s the fourth state championship in school history, and first since 2009. Senior Carly Bachelor was named the tournament’s MVP by WIBW and Sports in Kansas. We spoke to coach Bordewick about his team’s championship season.
