Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Hayden senior tennis players Sean Sandstrom and Philip Voegeli and Shawnee Heights sophomore track and field athlete Shelby Butterfield.

Sandstrom and Voegeli teamed up to win the city’s number one doubles tennis championship last Thursday. It was a repeat of sorts for both players, as Sandstrom was part of the city championship number one doubles team in 2018 while Voegeli played on the number two doubles team that won city last year. Though Sandstrom has played singles most of the season, he and Voegeli were teamed up and helped Hayden tie for second in the city meet. Sandstrom then went on to place fourth in singles at the Centennial League meet on Monday. We spoke to Sean and Phillip about being teamed up, how they evaluate each other as players, and more.

Butterfield helped the Thunderbird girls to a team title at their home meet last Friday, finishing in first place in the long jump with a season-best leap of 17 feet, 11 inches. She also ran a leg of the first-place 4×400 meter relay and was second in the 200 meters. This season Butterfield has set city standards in the long jump and high jump as well as the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. She placed in the 300 meter hurdles, the long jump and the triple jump at the 5A state meet last season. We spoke to Shelby about her hurdling strategy, setting a PR in the long jump, building on her strong freshman season, and more.
