Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize the Class 4A State boys tennis champion Hayden Wildcats, and also salute Class 5A State boys singles champion Pietro Perego from Seaman.

The Wildcats captured their first state crown since 2014 and fourth in school history, edging out Wichita Trinity by four points last weekend in Pratt. They were led by the singles efforts of senior Sean Sandstrom, who defeated Circle’s Carson Mosier 6-2, 6-1 in the final to win the individual championship. Sandstrom is the fifth player in Hayden history to win a singles title. His teammate, junior Ronan Boyle, placed fourth in singles. Senior Phillip Voegeli and freshman Michael Sandstrom teamed up to claim fifth in doubles, ripping off five consecutive wins after losing in their first round match. Seniors Colton Broxterman and Justin Broxterman also competed in doubles at state. We spoke to all six team members, plus their head coach James Sandstrom, about their successful season.

Earlier this spring, we spoke with Pietro Perego, who made it known immediately that he was going to be a force in tennis this spring for the Vikings. His season ended with a flourish in Topeka, as he took home the 5A individual championship with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Adam Burke from St. James Academy. Perego, an exchange student from Italy, went 28-1 on the season. In case you missed it, hear Pietro’s story of coming to Topeka from Milan with big goals for this season and his future in tennis.
