Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Washburn Rural junior track athlete Jaylen Carter and Hayden junior track athlete Kyra Bauer.

Carter brought home first place in the 100 meter dash at his 6A regional last season, returning to the state meet after injuries plagued his sophomore season. His time of 10.88 was four-hundredths of a second better than the rest of the field and helped Washburn Rural claim third place as a team at the regionals. Carter also starred on the gridiron this past fall for the Junior Blues, earning All-City honors and starting at running back and defensive back. We spoke to Jaylen about overcoming injuries, choosing track over another beloved sport, and more.

Bauer snagged double gold at her 4A regional meet last week for the Wildcats, placing first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.92 and in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 4 inches. She also placed fourth in the 100 meters and helped the 4×400 meter relay team finish fourth to qualify for state in those events. Bauer also competes in basketball and volleyball at Hayden. We spoke to Kyra about her strategy in the 400 meters, how she came to love track, being part of a successful team effort at regionals, and more.
