Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Shawnee Heights junior track and field athlete Davion Gardenhire and Topeka West freshman swimmer Kadence Jeffries.

Gardenhire blew past the competition in the sprint events at last Friday’s Joe Schrag City Invitational, winning three gold medals and setting personal bests in the process. He ran a 10.85 in the 100 meters, a 22.33 in the 200 and a 50.77 in the 400. All three of those times are the city’s best individual times this season. Gardenhire also plays football for the Thunderbirds. We spoke to Davion about setting three personal records at the same meet, the secret to his preparation, when he first knew he was fast, and more.

Jeffries was a double gold medalist at last Friday’s city championships. She took home first place in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Jeffries also swam the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay team that took third place, and swam the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay team that placed second. We spoke to Kadence about her success as a freshman, her best attributes as a swimmer, and more.
