Wendy’s and 580 WIBW are proud to celebrate standout achievements in prep sports in the city of Topeka by naming our Athletes of the Week each week.

This week, we recognize Washburn Rural golfer Hayden Beck and Shawnee Heights softball player Sydney Wellshear.

Beck captured the city golf championship on Monday with a 27-hole score of 112, taking home the title by two shots. His effort led the Junior Blues to their tenth consecutive city championship, and also helped them take first in the Topeka West Invitational, which was held concurrently. Beck finished eighth at 6A state last season and will be seeking his third straight trip to state both individually and with his team. We spoke to Hayden about carrying on Rural golf tradition, the part of his game he’s working on the hardest, what he thought about Tiger Woods’ win at the Masters, and more.

Wellshear has sparked the Thunderbird offense in their 12-0 start to the season. The wins have moved Heights’ winning streak on the diamond to 62 in a row, including the last two 5A state championships. Wellshear has been a pivotal part of those title teams and is currently hitting a jaw-dropping .703 with seven home runs to pace this year’s team. Wellshear also played golf at Heights and qualified for state twice in her career. We spoke to Sydney about her hitting philosophy, being the two-time defending champs, her college commitment to Central Missouri, and more.
